Swimming against the current of a turbulent maritime sector
is the much more niche yachting industry, which has experienced
10% growth in the last year and shows no signs of slowing down.
Yachting is a very special world, full of special individuals
shares Winnie Rinck, General Manager for Antibes at ATPI Yacht Logistics.
“It’s a sector of high technology, highly concentrated expertise and truly magnificent yachts. I feel incredibly lucky to have been working in the sector for over 30 years.”
The rise in popularity of experience-focused travel is likely to be a contributing factor to the upwards trajectory of the industry, with consumers making more luxury choices. The number of destinations for yacht chartering is increasing at a steady pace and the demand for yacht chartering has risen accordingly.
Moreover, the growing inclination of corporate consumers towards yacht chartering is also on the rise, as corporates look for destinations that are serene and peaceful, yet chic and full of entertainment.
“The yachting sector has really exploded over the last ten years and we’ve seen a considerable jump in both the number and size of boats. Now more than ever, a yacht is seen as a status symbol,” says Winnie.
Despite its growth little is known in the public domain about the yachting sector, with the processes and operations that keep the industry afloat remaining relatively closed. This could be due to the widespread misconceptions that surround yacht chartering, often that yachts are used as a display of wealth by the rich and famous.
“Owners of yachts are not the huge stars that many people think,” explains Winnie. “They are more often highly influential people in the world of finance, energy or business – or are even world leaders.”
The truth is that the yachting sector is incredibly discreet, with yacht owners or those looking to charter a yacht choosing to use agents and specialists who can provide an unforgettable experience without creating a show for all to see.
Unlike the wider maritime sector, of which digitalisation has now firmly taken hold, the yachting industry is carving its own course, bucking the trend of downsizing crews and moving service online by growing the size of crews to ensure great service and offering a consultative service to clients.
“There’s no doubt about it, the yachting sector is a world of its own.”
